Hello there, @saltern214-aol-c.

MTD must be activated in QuickBooks. You can tell whether it is by looking for the MTD logo and green check in the VAT Center.

Since your accounts aren't on QuickBooks, you'll want to use bridging software for Making Tax Digital in QuickBooks Online. That way, you can upload the necessary amounts for boxes 1 through 9. Then, submit it digitally to HMRC through QuickBooks in accordance with MTD.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Taxes menu, then select VAT.
  2. Click the dropdown arrow beside the Prepare return tab, then click Submit with a spreadsheet
  3. Ensure that your VAT number and VAT period is correct, then select Browse to upload your file and click Next.

Next, open the Excel spreadsheet on your computer, then make a note of which cell the final figure for Box 1 is in. After that, go back in QuickBooks and follow the steps below to continue:

  1. Select the sheet that contains your VAT return. If you have multiple tabs on the spreadsheet, click the one with the 9-box summary.
  2. Enter the cell number to map Box 1, so QuickBooks can populate the rest of the final figures for you and then review the final figures in QuickBooks.
  3. Ensure it matches the figures on your spreadsheet, then select Review return.
  4. Tick the box to declare that the information is correct and complete.
  5. Select Submit to HMRC and Done.
