I want to try quickbooks for a year alongside my current VAT, can i use the VAT part without sending to HRMC?

Yes, you can set up and use the VAT feature in QuickBooks Online without sending the data to HRMC.

Thanks for the quick reply. 

I understand that I can do the VAT on quick books but I want to know if I can do the VAT on QuickBooks but DO NOT send to HRMC. 

basically like a test run along side my current software.

When creating transactions with VAT, submitting a Tax Return isn't automatic. That being said, you can make a test run without sending them to HMRC.

 

Please check out the Submit a VAT return in QuickBooks article. It contains detailed instructions and screenshots on how you submit them through the system (scroll down to Submit a VAT Return to HMRC).
