I am trying to set up VAT on QB however I am unable to enter a date into the "when do you need to start calculating VAT from" box. It is not selectable, clicking on it does not allow me to input a date...

Are there any other settings or options I need to enter somewhere?

Let me help you set your VAT in QuickBooks Online (QBO), verto_64.

We can select the month you need to start calculating VAT from when setting it up.

In your case, we can access QBO using an incognito browser. Private browser prevents saving cache and cookies that sometimes cause errors when running frequently visited websites. Here are the shortcut keys:

  • Ctrl + Shift + N for Google Chrome
  • Ctrl + Shift + P for Firefox
  • Control + Option + P for Safari

Once done, we can set up VAT for your company again:

  1. In QuickBooks, go to Taxes and choose Set up VAT.
  2. Choose the month you need to start calculating VAT from.
  3. Select your filing frequency for VAT. This is how often you will submit VAT returns to HMRC.
  4. Choose your accounting method.
    • Select Standard (also known as accrual) if you record income and expenses when you send the invoice or receive the bill, regardless if the invoice or bill was paid or not.
    • Select Cash if you record income and expenses at the time you receive the payment or pay the bill.
  5. Enter your 9-digit VAT registration number.
  6. If applicable, tick the Flat Rate Scheme (FRS) box and enter the percentage and tax registration date.
  7. Press Next and then OK.

You can check out this article for more details about setting up and using the VAT feature: Set up and edit VAT settings, codes, and rates in QuickBooks Online. If it works, return to your default browser and clear the cache. Every so often the cache becomes overwhelmed with older data which can potentially cause viewing and performance issues. Clearing it will refresh the system, and you'll be able to work with a clean slate. Switching to other supported web browsers can also help rectify the issue.

Additionally, filing your VAT return is a breeze if you run a VAT Detail report in QBO. This way, you'll see a list of included transactions in each box on the VAT return.

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions along the way. My utmost priority is to ensure that you feel confident and empowered in managing your VAT. Thank you for choosing QuickBooks Online, and I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to provide you with further assistance.
