hello. We recently transitioned from sole trader to limited company so we had applied to MTD back in December 2018.

We have disconnected and reconnected but getting the error code CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORISED

I've tried to discuss with quickbooks twice with no solution and I've called HMRC but their phone lines are not only distorted (an ongoing issue) but they hang up and say they cannot help.

anyone else had this issue please? thanks

I’ve got you covered, @karen6271.

I understand how precious time is for you. I also appreciate the effort trying to get the issue resolved.

These are some of the potential causes of the error message: client_or_agent_not_authorised:

  • Every 18 months you are required by HMRC to re-establish your connection with them in QuickBooks. Try disconnecting and reconnecting your account to fix this.
  • Use the correct Gateway Gateway user ID and password specifically for MTD provided to your by HMRC–this should be sent to you via email.
  • Make sure you turn on MTD for VAT in QuickBooks and connect to HMRC.
  • Utilize the correct VAT registration number (VRN) in QuickBooks. If you've been issued a new VRN, you'll need to update this in QuickBooks, here's how to edit VAT settings.

When you're ready, you'll need to disconnect and reconnect your account. It only takes a few clicks to accomplish them.

Here’s how to disconnect your account:

  1. Click the Gear icon and select Account and settings.
  2. In Advanced, select Making Tax Digital.
  3. Hit Learn how to disconnect and follow the steps.

Once done, reconnect your account using the correct login credentials. For detailed instructions, proceed to Step 2 in this article: How to reauthorise QuickBooks Online for MTD.
