I'm new to QB and not an accountant.  When I go to setup VAT, it doesn't let me select a start month for when to calculate.  Should I have done something prior to this?

You're doing the right tracking with the setup. We perform some troubleshooting steps to fix the issue, drew873.

There are times that your browser is full of frequently accessed page resources that may cause some unusual responses. To isolate, you can log into your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account in a private window (incognito). Here's how:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Google Chrome).
  • Ctrl Shift + P (Firefox).
  • Control + Option + P (Safari).

Once signed in, double-check if you can already select the start month of your current VAT period. If so, return to your default browser and clear the cache to speed up the loading process. Every so often the cache becomes overwhelmed with older data which can potentially cause viewing and performance issues. Clearing it will refresh the system, and you'll be able to work with a clean slate. However, if the issue persists, try using other supported browsers.

For more information on the setup process, check out this article for your guide: Set Up and Edit VAT Settings, Codes, and Rates. Furthermore, learn how to run a VAT report. This helps you file your return and submit it to your agency. I've added this article for your reference: VAT 100 Report.
