There's a tick in MTG and "enabled" but nothing happens

Let's make sure you can open your VAT return so you can successfully submit them, Armstrong.

Once you connect your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account with Making Tax Digital (MTD) to submit a return, it is important to check the email confirmation from HMRC. This will give you the

new MTD credentials you'll need to use to set up the MTD feature in QuickBooks. At the same time, it also gives you a confirmation of whether or not your connection is successful. Mostly, this can take up to 72 hours.

If you didn't get an email, ensure to check your spam or junk folder. If it's beyond 72 hours, we recommend that you contact HMRC. On top of that, your VAT registration number should match with those that you use in QuickBooks. Choosing a different registration number will cause difficulties when you submit your return.

You can also use your MTD credentials when setting up MTD in QuickBooks. To know more about the process, continue with No. 3 in this article: Fix MTD Issues And Errors In QuickBooks Online.

Otherwise, if you're still experiencing the same issue, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to fix the problem. Use the shortcut keys below to access a private window (incognito):

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P

When using incognito mode, this deletes cookies and browser history leaving your browser clean and easy to access any websites and error-free. After that, go back to the VAT return and check if everything is already working fine. If it works, then go back to the main browser to clear its cache and delete some outdated files that might be the cause of the error. You can also use and switch to a different browser if it's still doing the same.

Moreover, QuickBooks Online (QBO) tracks payment due dates in one place to avoid late returns, surcharges, and penalties. Check out this article on how you can review them so you can file your return and record VAT payments: File Your VAT And Record Tax Payments In QuickBooks Online.
