That's the point of the feature.

Intuit has stated it is their legal responsibility to save you from yourself, to force you to use a strong password when your file contains sensitive information.  I think this is likely a gross misinterpretation of some US Federal regulation, but no one at Intuit seems interested in reviewing the feature.

Thank you for your response.  So, I have no choice.  If I want to open my company file again I must create a password first.  Is that right?

Much appreciated.

So what happens if you try to use quickbooks 2020 and you do not have internet?  Can't use it?

November 25, 2019

Hello bigjeff,

Having Internet access when using QuickBooks Desktop is helpful for making sure you have access to the most recent program updates, but isn't a requirement of the program. If you have 2020 installed but don't currently have access to the Internet, you can still use the program and set up passwords for accessing it.

To learn more specifically about passwords in the program, read the following article: Password security for QuickBooks Desktop

I'm available if you have further questions!

Our alternative to this BS is to migrate to another accounting program.  There are many alternatives out there.  I encourage all dissatisfied users to follow my lead and start the process ASAP.  Push back against this "Big Brother" behavior.

I can't get past the set up window.

After I enter all the requested data the window closes, then posts a message that my password has been changed and then reopens the original set up window.

The new set up window still accepts my original password and does the exact same thing regardless of what I enter.

Has anyone else experienced this??

Any advise would be greatly appreciated...

Hi Todwoned,

Thanks for bringing this to my attention and taking a moment to describe what's happening when trying to set up or enter your password. The password protection feature is an important part of protecting your QuickBooks Desktop data, but I also don't want for you to be stuck in a loop where you cannot even access your books. I can help direct you on this.

For this kind of issue, I recommend connecting with our QuickBooks Desktop team outside of this community forum. This'll give us the opportunity to see the problem in action, clarify a few things with you, troubleshoot, and determine the next steps to resolve this. Check out our Intuit QuickBooks Desktop software support policies page to see the contact options, hours, and other details about getting in touch.

We've got your back!
