2023 QB valid account requirement or fraud attempt?

I received two calls this past Friday from a "name unavailable" phone number with a 908 area code (New Jersey).  The second call was because I didn't give them the response they wanted after the first call.

 

The person identified themselves as our Intuit Accounts Manager, "Jonathan [removed]" (yes, like from literature), but his accent did not match what I would expect for that name.  He was advising that our credit card on file had been declined/was expired and he was saying that our payment was 21 days past due and needed to be resolved ASAP.

 

I asked him for some type of proof and he gave me [removed] as a callback number, which I cannot match to Intuit by reverse lookup.  He was able to immediately send me via e-mail what looked like a screenshot of our account license information, which did look legit and came from "[email address removed]", but was marked as a "no reply" message. 

 

Since I took no action (our bookkeeper is on vacation), he called again today trying to get a payment of $749.99/year for a REQUIRED "Data Backup" service for QB.  He said this was separate from our yearly subscription fees.  Then he said if paying by AmEx or Visa certain discounts would apply or I could get a cheaper rate if we signed for 2 years.  Because I started questioning if the call was legit, he offered to send me an invoice, but said once it was issued it couldn't be changed until the following year, so they needed to know our payment method first to determine which rate to list.  I never got that e-mail with the invoice.

 

The more I spoke to him, the more it felt and sounded like a scam, but we have made some account changes in the last few months, so I wasn't sure if this was a required and valid program?

 

Has anyone else received a similar call?

On the other hand, since you're not sure whether an email came from Intuit, you can look for the following signs to validate it:

 

  • We’ll never ask for your personal info in an email.
  • Our emails will always come from an email address that ends with @intuit.com. This includes @e.intuit.com.
  • Any link we send you in an email will always be for an intuit.com address.

 

If you receive an Intuit email you need clarification on, see our security notices for details of suspicious emails declared by other customers.

Additionally, I encourage you to report the fraudulent activity to our Intuit Security team. Here's how you can do it:

 

  1. Go to this link: https://security.intuit.com/.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Look for Report a fake email (or phishing email) and click on it.

Thanks for the reply, @Kevin_C, I appreciate it.  I will send the e-mail and the other details I collected from the caller to the spoof address so it can be researched further.

Yes - got this yesterday, said my credit card for our renewal didn't go thru the day before which was the correct day. Had my last 4 digits of my card, my license number of my QB. How would they have this info if there were from Quickbooks. This fraud is getting worse and worse, we have had one of our 3 business checking accounts have fraud this month also. 

Very concerning !

We have known about this issue since they introduced the QB Desktop 2021 Plus edition. That's why we recommend our clients buy new licenses or renewal through trusted partners instead of going directly to Intuit.

I appreciate you for bringing this matter to our attention, Tricia. I'm here to share how we can prevent fraud calls from parties claiming to be affiliated with Intuit.

 

Our QuickBooks representative won't call you unless you initiate a callback request. Also, they will not ask for or provide any personal information. To investigate this, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Support Support Team. They're equipped with tools to determine if this call is legit or fraudulent. Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click Contact Us.
  4. Give a brief description of your issue.
  5. Once done, click Message Us or Let's talk.

 

If the call is fraudulent, I suggest reporting this to our Privacy and Security team to avoid experiencing this issue in the future:

 

  1. Head to this link: https://security.intuit.com/.
  2. Next, click the Contact Us button.
  3. Then, look for Report technical support scams section and click it.

I have received very similar calls - two times where I actually fell for the scam. They insisted that they were from Intuit and that I had a critical failure in my computer and that is why my updates weren't loading.  I actually had a message that my update was not working so I thought they were legitimate.  hey ended up loading a new version of QB on a different computer----yes this went on for several days. I paid them a lot of money and it took me a few weeks to realize it was fraud when I had to contact Intuit to help me set up backups and move QB to another computer and they didn't charge me anything since I have a subscription. I have disputed the charges on our credit card and this fraudulent company has called me back several times to ask me if I received a refund which I have not.  They have not asked me for more information other than trying to confirm the chargeback. Then, I received a similar call yesterday from another person telling me that were with Intuit and need to update my Payroll but the Credit card was expired. I asked a million questions to confirm that is who why were, but they kept insisting they were Intuit and gave me name, employee ID and phone number, so they still got my card from me. I immediately contacted INTUIT via chat they confirmed that this was fraud and I called my bank to stop the payment.  I am so upset and want to report these people to the FTC.  I am going to look into that now.  Just wanted others to beware. I am a trained professional and have lots of training on avoiding scams so this is really so upsetting that I have fallen for it two times!!

Log into your CAMPS and change your phone number. They may try contacting via email again but at least you can isolate those attempts.
