I am trying to add new accounts to the Chart of Accounts. I've added one but it's not showing up in the list. I've feel like I'm missing something here. I am familiar with QuickBooks Desktop but am new to QB Online. I'm trying to change the chart of account in QB Online. Thanks.

Congrats on your new QuickBooks Online account, @gailluther.

I'd be glad to help you with adding a new account to the Chart of Accounts.

A new account can be added to your Chart of Accounts with just a few clicks. Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Select New in the top right corner.
  3. Click on the Account Type drop-down to select the account type.
  4. Select the Detail Type to specify the type of account that you want to add.
  5. Enter the name of the account in the Name field.
  6. You have the option of including information in the Description field and an amount in the Balance field.
  7. Click Save and Close.

The following is a brief video to serve as a visual reference:

Additionally, I'm including articles that contain further information on this: Learn how to set up and add accounts to your chart of accounts.

On the other hand, to confirm the setup of the account that previously you've added, I suggest checking it from the Audit Log of your account. This area keeps track of your activities, where you can see who made changes to your books and what they did. This way, you can verify if there are steps that you've missed during the setup.

To do that:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙.
  2. Select Audit Log.
  3. Select Filter.
  4. Use the fields on the Filter panel to choose the appropriate UserDate, or Events filter to narrow the results.
  5. Select Apply

From there, you can start editing the account that you made before.

Also, to guide you in utilizing the audit log feature, please see this article: Learn what the audit log can do and how to use it to keep an audit trail.

Should you have any questions, please post a comment, and I'll be happy to help. Wishing you all the best.
