Company Realm ID and primary account

I have used QB since 1999 and use payroll. There has been a struggle for a long time over who is the primary user on the account. (I am the ONLY user.) When I went to opt-out of something recently, I couldn't, because "You don't have permission. Contact the primary..." So after yet another hour with chat/support, they're telling me to change the Intuit ID setting and I am the "primary," just can't do "primary" things. I can't afford to lose 22 years' of QB, so I thought maybe someone here knew if this was a dangerous thing or a normal thing. (I'm not a QB expert. I just know how to use it.)

Does anyone know if changing the "realm ID" is a dangerous thing?

Let me ease your confusion, TTI.

The company realm ID is connected to your Intuit account. Changing it is not dangerous at all. Your data is safe.

However, you can still create a backup copy of your company file so you'll feel comfortable updating your realm ID.

If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to let us know. We're just one comment away. Keep safe!

Well, that worked! (It was scary, as is all accounting to me.) I think the issue is that I bought QB way back in the late 1990s and then upgrades, and a new edition (etc.). Somehow, there must have been 2 versions of my company. This resolved it and thanks for your reassurance.

Wow! That's amazing!

We have been having realm ID problems for a year, and so far have been unable to get anything resolved.

Purchased an existing CPA practice, and the new owner has been unable to get this changed in QBD.

For some reason it is not an issue in QBO.

Different security requirements based on the software package?

Very strange.

Glad you got your issue resolved.

We have QB Desktop and have several different companies and each has their own file. One business was a partnership and the partner is taking over full control of the business. The new accountant is asking for Primary Admin or Realm ownership of our file. We are concerned about what level of access we will have after that, since we still work that needs to be completed before filing a Final Tax Return (for the partnership). And then if we ever need to reference something 5, 7, 12 years from now. We have never heard of these ideas before, so this is all new to us. Thanks.

@A Huddart

Open their company file and navigate to menu Company > Set Up Users and Password > Set Up Users

You will create a new user profile for this request. Then create and share a new backup file (*.qbb) to the requester. You can keep the original file as is until they ask you to delete it from your system.
