Convert for-profit company to non-profit

I'm taking over as treasurer for a small non-profit organization.  The current treasurer has characterized our organization as a for-profit company in QB 2020 Desktop.  I prefer to use the non-profit version of QB desktop.  How do I convert our organization's data?

Hi there, bagek007.

I'm glad to see you posting here in QuickBooks Community to assist you with whatever concern you may have.

QuickBooks Desktop Premier, QuickBooks Accountant (QBA), Enterprise Solutions Accountant (QBESA), and Quickbooks Enterprise Solutions (QBES) have the Toggle feature. This enables you to change your QuickBooks Desktop edition from a specific industry to another.

The Toggle to Another Edition option for QuickBooks Desktop Premier or QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions to another edition is located under the Help menu.

For QuickBooks Accountant or QuickBooks Enterprise Accountant to toggle to another edition is located under the File menu.

If you're still unable to see the said option above, please send us a screenshot. This way, we can investigate why the Toggle to Another Edition is missing.

Please refer to this article to see different information on how to get started how to continue setting up your business to make sure your financial statements are accurate in QBDT: Get started with QuickBooks Desktop.

Please let me know how it goes by leaving a comment on this thread. I'd be glad to answer if you have any follow-up questions or concerns. Take care always!

I can guide you in converting your for-profit company to a non-profit edition, PegMcKee.

We can select the QuickBooks Premier NonProfit. It's the standard version of QuickBooks that costs less and can easily be adapted to suit nonprofit organizations. Customizing it for nonprofit accounting is simple and mainly involves changing a few terms in the menus.

You can follow the steps below to convert your company:

  1. Log into your company file.
  2. Select File from the top menu bar.
  3. Choose Toggle to Another Edition.
  4. Select Non-Profit Edition.
  5. Click Next, then hit Toggle.

I've included an article that will guide you in managing your non-profit company: Nonprofit Accounting Basics: How to Customize QuickBooks for Your Needs.

If you need additional help in performing the steps, please reach out to me and I'll be sure to get back to assist you.

This isn't working for me. I have QB Premier Plus edition and I would like to switch it to the Non Profit edition. There is no toggle in the file menu.

I understand that you need to switch to a non-profit, MM106.

The Toggle feature is only available to QuickBooks Desktop Premier, QuickBooks Accountant (QBA), Enterprise Solutions Accountant (QBESA), and Quickbooks Enterprise Solutions (QBES).

Also, we're unable to update the business type after setting up the company file. What I can suggest is to change the Income Tax Return Used in QuickBooks Desktop. Please follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Company menu and select My Company.
  2. Click the Pencil icon and press Report Information.
  3. Tap the Income Tax Form Used and select the correct filing form.
  4. Select OK to save it.

Please post again here if you have more questions. Wishing you all the best!
