Is it possible to change an account to a sub-account after it has been created?

Yes, open the chart of accounts, edit the account and set it to sub account.  BUT the parent MUST be the same type of account

Thanks for getting back to us, @aquinones.

I'll share the steps on how to fix grayed-out Subaccount of. You'll want to run our Verify and Rebuild tool. These tools self-identifies the most commonly known data issues within a company file and self-resolve most data integrity issues that the Verify Data finds.

Here's how:

  1. Choose Window then Close All.
  2. Go to File then Utilities.
  3. Select Verify Data

If you see "Your data has lost integrity," indicates there is data damage in the file. Continue to the steps below to Rebuild Data to correct the problem.

  1. Go to File then Utilities.
  2. Select Rebuild Data

Once done, reboot your computer and then log in as the QuickBooks Admin. Go back to the Chart of Accounts and then edit the account again.

I'm also adding this link here in case you encounter errors running the software: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.

Let me know how it goes after trying the above steps as I want to ensure this is resolved for you. Take care and have a great rest of the week.
