Question

Detail Type

Does QBO provide a list of detail types?  Or does anyone know how to skip them when doing an imported .csv?

In the help article, it says "Tip: If you’re new to types and detail types in QuickBooks, it’s OK to leave these fields blank for now. You can add them later."

Not true, at least not that I've been able to figure out.  When I try to import my chart of accounts, every single one of my accounts has an angry red box around the Detail Type field.  I don't like being forced to manually select from a drop-down menu to select a detail type for every single one of my 200+ accounts.  Would be much easier if I could do this within in the spreadsheet prior to import.

Thanks for any hacks or workarounds.  I would be more than happy to skip detail types altogether, but the upload page won't let me.

Hi @whyisthishard,

I appreciate you for getting in touch with us about importing your chart of accounts. I know it would be more convenient and time-saving not to enter the detail types.

The information from the article regarding skipping the types and detail types is not updated. We already reported the page to our backend team to make the necessary changes.

Since a list of the detail types is unavailable, I recommend using our QBO test drive. You can refer to Craig’s Design and Landscaping test company for some examples of the information. Please visit this page: Test drive QuickBooks Online.

To view them within QuickBooks, Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Chart of accounts.
  3. Press New in the upper-right corner.
  4. Choose an account type.
  5. Select the detail type.
  6. View the description.
  7. Hit Save and Close.

I appreciate your input about uploading accounts. We always update the features in QuickBooks Online, and this preference might be available in the future.

As we assess this, I suggest you visit our QuickBooks Blog to stay updated with all the changes that are being made.

For additional reference, I've attached a link you can use about entering detail types in QuickBooks: Learn about detail types in chart of accounts.

Drop me a comment below if you have any other questions about importing data. I'll be happy to help you some more.

What I want is a list of the detail types that QBO will accept.  Looking at "Craig" doesn't help me know the full scope of acceptable entries.  Surely if someone programmed the chart of accounts page to only accept certain values, a list of those values must exist.  Can it be posted so that users don't have to manually click through drop-down menus for hundreds of accounts?  This is a huge barrier to getting started with Quickbooks.

Thank you to anyone who can recommend a practical workaround.
