You'll have to visit the Reports menu and run the Transaction List by Customer report in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @CassidyScott. I'm here to guide you how.

A work in progress (WIP) is an accumulating cost in an asset account. The Transaction List by Customer report will let you view the complete list of recorded transactions under a customer or job. You just need to filter the date and customer from the Customize button. This way, you're able to get the specific information you need.

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. Type in Transaction in the search box and select the Transaction List by Customer report.
  3. Click the Customize button.
  4. Set the date in the Report period field.
  5. Go to the Filter section, then select either the All, Specified, or Not Specified option from the Customer drop-down.
  6. Click Run report.

I've attached a screenshot below that shows the last three steps.

Then, once a project is completed, the cost in the asset account is moved to the expense account. You can pull up the Profit and Loss (P&L) report from the Reports menu to verify.

After that, you have the option to save the report's current customization settings. This way, you won't be going through the same steps again in case you'll be needing the same one. For the step-by-step guide, you can refer to this article: Memorize reports in QuickBooks Online. It also includes details about setting a schedule and emailing a memorized report.

For the complete list of available reports in QBO, I'd recommend checking out this article: Reports included in your QuickBooks Online subscription. It provides information on which reports are accessible per QBO version.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you again. If you have any other QuickBooks questions, please feel free to add a comment below. I'm just around to help. Take care always.

Thank you.  I need to find out how much is in the account "work in progress", not just the transactions assigned to the customer.  With the construction industry, jobs/projects are long term and ongoing and therefore journal entries are done to move over COGS and Income for each quarter.  In QB Desktop version, my work in progress reports were not a problem to run and see how much of the specific job/project/customer had left in work in progress, not every single transaction for the job/project.  However in QB Online, these reports are not already built in and when I customize the reports they often come up with "no data", which I know is incorrect.  Thank you for the attempt to help, however your reply doesn't address what I am needing.

Hey there, @CassidyScott

Thanks for reaching back out to the Community and adding some extra clarification on your issue about reports.

Since running the Transaction List by Customer didn't seem to work, I recommend trying the Transaction Detail by Account list. This will allow you to see the account with the customer and its items.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports tab on the left-hand menu bar.
  2. Select the Reports portion.
  3. Type "Transaction Detail by Account" in the search bar and then click on it.
  4. From here, you'll be able to set the Report Period to your liking.

Afterward, you can customize the report to meet your needs for your business. In the end, you may need to pull multiple reports for all the information needed.

Should you need any further assistance with reports, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm only a comment away if you need me. Have a great day!
