Edit Account Type not working

Thanks for reaching out to us, @DeborahMc. Thanks for providing in-depth details about your concern with changing an account type in QuickBooks Online (QBO). I've got some information to help you alter it seamlessly.

Beforehand, may I know if you encountered a specific error message after clicking the Save and close button?

Nonetheless, we can change the type of account as long as it is not a default account in QBO. Check out this article for more details and to learn what accounts can't be modified: Manage default and special accounts in your QuickBooks Online chart of accounts.

Moreover, please remember that when editing an account type, you'll have to start from the subaccounts if there are any. Then, change the parent account when all of them have been adjusted. Here's how:

1. Go to Settings, then select Chart of Accounts.
2. Locate the first subaccount to change.
3. From the Action column dropdown menu, select Edit.
4. Select the Save account under ▼ dropdown to choose a new account type and pick the appropriate detail type in the Tax form section ▼ dropdown (Accountant view).
5. Change the Account Type and Detail Type. Ensure the Is sub-account is unchecked in the meantime (Business view).
6. Tap  Save and you'll be prompted that changing the Account Type may affect your accounting and reporting.
7. Hit Yes in the prompt to change the account.

However, if you're changing a parent account and it's not a default one, you should be able to save it seamlessly. If the issue persists, I suggest logging into your account using a private browser/ incognito mode. Private browsing prevents cookies from being stored on your computer, making it a great place to identify browser issues. Use these keyboard shortcuts:

• Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
• Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
• Safari: press Command + Shift + N

Once you're in incognito mode, update the account type. If it works, you can return to your regular browser and clear the cache to improve the program's performance. Otherwise, using other supported browsers can be a good alternative too.
