Question

How do you download W-2 as a .txt file instead of a .pdf? Our state requires a .txt file to electronically file W-2s and 1099s.

The system does not recognize the file if it is opened in Acrobat and simply re-saved as a .txt.

Hi, @goodmamafarm.

I've got an alternative way for you to file your W-2 and 1099 forms in the required format. Let me share the details below.

When the system doesn't recognize the file, it may indicate that your PC doesn't have the necessary software to handle that particular format. In this case, I recommend using a converter tool to convert your downloaded PDF file to a .TXT file format. This way, you'll be able to comply with your state's electronic filing system requirements.

To get started with filing your forms, check out these articles for detailed instructions:

Additionally, these resources can help you correct errors after you have e-filed:

Consider Exploring QuickBooks Payroll to elevate your payroll processing. The time-tracking features and quicker direct deposits could significantly benefit your business.

@Carneil_C  "When the system doesn't recognize the file, it may indicate that your PC doesn't have the necessary software to handle that particular format."

I suspect that you are very much not understanding the question at hand.

QB Desktop has the ability to generate State W2 EFW2 .txt files.

This is the format required to submit W-2s to most if not all states.

Does QBO not offer that?
