I am trying to run an expense report for 2021 that is broken out by expense category but detailed. I can group by exp but cannot get report by category/detailed.

If you mean category in the products & services list, it won’t appear as an option or a group on the report since they are used to organize the list. You can only pull up a report by category from your Chart of accounts.
