Question

I am using QB Online, however 2020 was closed in QB Desktop. It appears that 2020 was closed without a password. Is there anyway to open it?

I need to re-open YE 2020 and there is no password. Any way to open it to add the closing journal entries. The opening 1/1/2021 Trial balance does not agree.

Hi there, guetti-de.

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community. Let me discuss how the closing date and password work in QuickBooks Desktop. Then, ensure you can reopen QuickBooks by following the steps below.

Setting a closing date and a password in QBDT helps prevent any accidental changes to your past transactions that may affect your reports. Since the program was closed without a password, I recommend removing or clearing the closing date to reopen YE 2020.

Here's how:

  1. Open the QuickBooks Desktop as an Admin.
  2. Choose the Edit menu and Preferences.
  3. Select Accounting on the left panel.
  4. Click the Company Preferences tab.
  5. Choose the Set Date/Password button.
  6. Remove or clear the date set in the Closing Date field.
  7. Click OK.

Lastly, I'm adding this article on how QuickBooks creates automatic adjustments in preparation for the coming year: Close your books in QuickBooks Desktop.

You're more than welcome to visit this thread if you have more questions regarding your QBDT. I'm always here to help. Have a great day!
