You will not lose any entries that are in the current sub-account. They will no longer appear in the current parent account. To move a sub account to another level open to edit, uncheck This account is a sub account of..." and that should be it

I have a similar issue... I setup my employees credit cards as a sub account.  Now I figured out how to link the accounts to my banking page.  I was entering them all manually before.  Im afraid if I change the account from a Sub to Primary it will mess with transactions.  Willl that mess with any reconciliation done?

I would agree with john-pero, Casey F.

Transactions that were manually entered in the sub-account will not affect the posting accounts. You'll just have to uncheck the Is a sub-account option. Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and click Chart of accounts.
  2. Look for the sub-account and click the drop-down arrow besides View register. Click Edit.
  3. Uncheck the Is sub-account box.
  4. Click Save and Close.

There is no "is a subaccount" box to uncheck.

Thanks for joining the thread, @frankfalligant.

With the new QuickBooks Online (QBO) updates, we can make the sub-account inactive to remove it from the parent account. I'll guide you on how.

  1. Go to the Accounting menu, and then Chart of accounts.
  2. Look for the sub-account and click the View register drop-down arrow.
  3. Select Make inactive.
  4. Click Yes to confirm.

Additionally, you can also merge the two accounts. It will move all the data into the one you want to keep and removes the duplicate.

I'd also recommend balancing your credit card account every month. It will monitor your expenses and detect errors accordingly: Reconcile your account in QuickBooks Online.

Please be back if you have other questions about removing sub-account in QuickBooks. I'm just around to help. Take care always.

In this new QBO, is there no way to move a sub-account to either a parent account or under a different parent account? I made the account inactive and active and it is still under the old parent account.
