Question

I need to print a job cost report that includes labor cost. I track all expenses including labor by class, but all labor gets grouped into a "not specific" category.

    Hello there, @jfrazier.

     

    You can pull up the Time cost by employee or vendor report from the Projects menu in QuickBooks Online (QBO). Then, before you print, you'll have to customize it to get the information you need. Let me guide you how.

    1. Go to the Projects menu.
    2. Locate and select the project you want to view.
    3. Go to the Project Reports tab.
    4. Select the View option in the Time cost by employee or vendor section.
    5. On the report page, click the Customize button to filter the information you need. 
    6. Click the Print icon above the report once done.

     

    I've attached screenshots below that show the last four steps.

     

    You can use projects to quickly calculate your project income and costs. The system will separate your hourly labor to give you a clear picture of your profits from every project.       Thanks for the response. When I do what you say as a time report, it lists the labor by class, but I don't have an arbitrary "cost" setup per employee so it just shows as a zero cost.  Even if I did, the labor cost wouldnt be accurate as QB would simply multiply the arbitrary $/hr cost by the hours charged.  Why doesn't QB track the actual labor cost associated with those hours per employee?  (Not allocating employer taxes against the same class code is another complaint of mine as well!!) When I enter timesheets in QB payroll, I take the extra time to enter each employees hours by a customer and class code.  Every employee hour paid is accounted for by project and class code.   

       

      What you described allows me to look at labor alone, but why doesnt QB consider project labor as an expense when I run a profitability report?  For example go to projects/project reports/project profitability and run the report.  Then change the "display columns by" to "Classes", and the new report strips all of my actual labor costs into a "Not specified" category when I know that I entered labor hours by class.

        Currently, our Time Cost report is the best option for getting a real-time view of your project labor costs. If you'd like to submit feedback and/or product suggestions about QuickBooks Online, you can do so while signed in.
         

        Here's how:
        1. Use your Gear (⚙️) icon.
        2. Click Feedback.
        3. Enter your suggestions and/or comments.
        4. Hit Next.
        5. Choose Skip and send message.
        6. The available drop-down menu can be used to pick an appropriate category.
        7. Select Send message.
