Question

I've recently set up my LLC in Online. I have not collected sales tax, but it prevents me from turning off sales tax because it says I have. The report shows otherwise.

There is a button for turning off sales tax. The "Specialist" I talked to told me it can't be turned off once it is on, but why would they put a random button that doesn't work in the software? The liability report shows $0 for sales tax. I've only collected on about 8 invoices, and didn't collect sales tax on any of them... What is going on!?

Hi there, service-koepkeel.

Thank you for posting here in QuickBooks Community. I'll ensure to share details on how Sales tax works in QuickBooks.

QuickBooks can automatically do the sales tax calculations for you on your invoices and receipts for easy and accurate filings. Then, it lets you know when your tax payment is due, so you can file on time and avoid extra fees and that's the good benefit of having an automated sales tax in QuickBooks Online.

Once you activate the automated sales tax, it can no longer be turned off. However, the button for turning off sales tax you've seen is applicable only for users who didn't use any sales tax on the entries or set up a tax agency. To completely turn off the sales tax, you'll have to delete first all the invoices created, this is because even you didn't set up tax, it will still calculate taxes because of having a tax agency.

Here's how to delete:

1. Click the Sales menu.

2. Choose Invoices section.

3. Select all the created invoices by putting a checkmark in the box.

4. Click the Batch actions button. Then, choose Delete.

Once done, you can go to the Sales tax center and try to turn off the sales tax from there. Then, recreate all the invoices. This way, you're able to ensure that your data stays accurate.

If the issue continues to occur, I recommend logging in to your QuickBooks account using a private browser. Then, try to click the button for turning off sales tax from there. This is to rule out the possibility of a webpage issue, and private browsing doesn't store local files or cache.

Use these keyboard shortcuts based on the browser you're using.

  • For Firefox or Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  • For Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + N.
  • For Safari, hold down Command + Shift + N.

If it works in incognito, I recommend clearing the cache of your regular browser. This removes the history or log of sites so you can start with a clean slate. You can check this article to see the steps: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online.

If the steps above didn't work, use another supported browser as alternatives.

If the issue persists, you'll have to inactive tax rates to ensure that your transactions won't charge any tax-related costs.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Tax menu on the left panel.
  2. Choose Sales tax section.
  3. Pick Sales tax settings at the upper right hand.
  4. Choose each tax rate and click the drop-down arrow. Then, select Make inactive.
