Question

Is there a way to add your own (and remove/disable the QuickBooks') Account Types and Detail Types?

I am a part of a peer group that reports financial data Quarterly - I would just like to change my Chart of Accounts to be identical to the reporting so that it is easier to build the report each quarter. I tried to import the new ones, but it is making me change them to map to one of the existing types in QBO.

Adding or removing an Account type or Detail Type in Chart of Accounts (COA) isn't supported in QuickBooks Online (QBO), Zac. However, you can create a new account under the existing types that align more closely with your reporting needs. I'll show you how.

Currently, QBO provides a standard set of predefined Account Types and Detail Types, and custom types cannot be added or existing ones removed.

While you can't import new Account Types and Detail Types directly, you can create new accounts under the existing types.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Transactions section on the left sidebar and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the New button located in the top right corner.
  3. Input an Account name.
  4. Choose an Account type, then select the corresponding Detail type from the dropdown menu.
  5. If this account will be a subaccount, tick the option to Make this a subaccount and select the appropriate Parent account.
  6. For Bank, Asset, Credit Card, Liabilities, or Equity accounts, provide the Opening Balance and specify the starting date in the As of field.
  7. Press Save to complete the process.

If you have an accountant or financial advisor, I recommend consulting with them to determine the best way to map your accounts within the framework provided by QBO.
