Question

I tried uing a thumb drive to move QB desktop from our old laptop to our new PC and the thumb drive isn't big enough. So, we got an external hard drive, but when I go through the steps to move QB, it does not recognize the external hard drive as a USB. Am I doing something wrong or is there a different way to get QB moved?

Hello there, @WWAG1.

I appreciate you sharing the in-depth details of your concern. I'll share some insights on how you can move your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) company files to another computer.

Regarding your thumb drive, I would recommend consulting an IT professional to look into it further. They can assist you in checking if it is corrupted or even damaged.

If you have verified that it's working properly,

  1. Make sure you install QBDT on the new computer.
  2. Follow the steps to create a backup company file on your original laptop.
  3. Give the backup file a unique name when you store it for easy identification. This also avoids unintentional overwrites.
  4. Save the backup file somewhere you can easily find it, like your Windows desktop.
  5. Transfer the company backup file to your new computer. You can either put the backup on a flash drive or an external device.
  6. Follow the steps to restore the backup on your new computer. Please note that it should have a distinct file name.
  7. If you use payroll, download the latest tax table after you move your file.

Furthermore, there is a simple way to migrate everything if you use QBDT as a single user and don't put your company files on a network. Please keep in mind that you'll still need an external device to complete the process: Move or reinstall QBDT to another computer.

Additionally, I’m adding this resource that can guide you on how to handle the situation in case you encounter some errors while installing QBDT on your new computer: Fix QBDT install errors.

Keep me updated on how it works for you after following these steps. We're here to lend a hand if you need more help with your QBDT account. Keep safe!
