Question

My options when creating new accounts are more limited than in the tutorial

I have less options to edit or create a new account in my chart of accounts than the tutorial has.  I want to change my account numbers, but the edit and new buttons don't give me that option.  When I watched the tutorial, Hector had a completely different menu than I did, with more functionality.  I seem to have some slimmed down version with less options.

I've turned on account numbers, but most of my accounts don't have them, and like I said, I'm not given the option to edit them in, or add them in a new account.

How do I edit my chart of accounts to include the ability to add account numbers?

Thanks for becoming part of the Community,@Cparchem. I do appreciate your time and effort in watching the tutorial, replicating, and letting us know the result.

With regards to your first concern about the menu and functionality, there are two views in QuickBooks Online. That’s why your navigation menu looks different from the tutorial. Don’t worry, we’ll go over their differences to help you decide which one you’d like to use.

If you’re using the Business view, tasks relating to business and accounting are grouped together. This simplifies accounting terminology and uses different names for some features, buttons, and menus than accounting view.

See this screenshot for an overview of the Business view menu:

If you’re having the same interface above, you’ll want to switch to Accountant view. This offers more account types specific for your business, and uses the standard accounting terminology. Take a look at these snippet:

You’ll want to read this article to learn more about each view and how to customize them:

For your second question, you’ll need to assign the account numbers manually. I'd be glad to show you how:

  1.  On the left pane, select the Accounting menu and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Select Batch edit above the Action column.https://lithium-response-prod.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/intuit.response.lithium.com/RESPONSEIMAGE/21687ee1-b740-4a8f-9849-d15797ec698a.default.PNG
  3. Enter the account numbers in the Number column.https://lithium-response-prod.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/intuit.response.lithium.com/RESPONSEIMAGE/9f15b043-f6d9-4bfa-806e-f2ad5bd2e269.default.PNG
  4. Click Save.

To see your accounts’ numbers, click the Gear icon at the top of the list in the Action column. Then, select Number.
