We just got a new computer.  We installed Quickbooks 2016 and it is only working part of the time.  When trying to open a company file, we are receiving an error message that something went wrong and we need to rebuild the company file.  So we run the utility to rebuild the file, No issues are found, yet we still keep getting the error message.  I am starting to think it is an Intuit virus created to force us to upgrade to a fee structured version of Quickbooks.  Has anyone else had this problem?

Firstly, open the sample file. If you didn't encounter the same error message,your QBD 2016 program is fine.

Install the trial version of QB Desktop 2019 to upgrade your file. If the same error persists, your file is corrupted. You can purchase a 3rd party service to fix it.

I've got the steps to help you access your company file in QuickBooks Desktop 2016 on your computer.

 

We appreciate you for performing some troubleshooting steps to get this resolved. Aside from running the verify rebuild tool, we can use the QuickBooks Tool Hub. This tool helps fix common errors causing the company file to stop working.

 

To start, let's download and install the tool. Here's how:

 

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.5.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. 
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the installation finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

 

Once done, run the Quick Fix my Program. This will shut down any open background processes QuickBooks uses. I'll show you how:

 

  1. On the QuickBooks Tools Hub page, select Program Problems.
  2. Select Quick Fix my Program.
  3. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

 

If the issue persists, we need to update QuickBooks and check your file type. Here's how:

 

  1. Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
  2. Make sure the file you want to open is a company file (.QBW). You can't open other file types, like backups (QBB) and portable files (QBM) the same way.
  3. Make sure your file isn't compressed or encrypted.
  4. Right-click the company file and select Properties.
  5. Tap Advanced.
  6. Clear the Compress and Encrypt checkboxes. Then, press OK.
