Hello, @Snowman.

I'm here to present some tricks so the Nontaxable will show it in the Sales tax report in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

A bunch of cache files on your browser can sometimes cause this to happen. I'd recommend doing some primary troubleshooting steps to shut away from the problem.

To start, let's access your account via incognito. These browsers won't collect any browsing histories.

Here are the shortcut keys:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari 11 or newer: ⌘ + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P

Once logged in, re-check the report to verify if it's already working properly. Make sure to select the correct Report period, Tax Agency, and Accounting method. If the Nontaxable is now showing, please go back to your usual browser and clear the cache. So, it will speed up your overall browsing experience and help fix other issues. Using other supported browsers is a good alternative too.

I've also added some pages that might help you in memorizing, customizing reports, and other relevant matters.

Please let me know if you have other follow-up questions about your reports. I'm eager to assist you. Take care.

This didn’t change the outcome in any way unfortunately.

Thanks for getting back here, @Snowman.

Let's make sure that you've selected the correct Report period when running the Sales Tax Liability Report. If all filters are correct and can't still see the Non Taxable Amount column, I suggest reaching out to our technical support team to further investigate the root cause of the issue. To do so, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Help menu and select Contact Us.
  2. From the What can we help you with? field, enter Non-taxable sales not showing on the Sales Tax report.
  3. Then, click Continue.
  4. Choose either Chat with us or Have us call you.

Also, you create a Non-Taxable sales report in QuickBooks Online using these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Reports menu.
  2. From the search field, key in and click Taxable Sales Detail.
  3. Hit Customize.
  4. Choose the date range in the General dropdown.
  5. On the Filter dropdown, check the box for Customer Taxable, and choose Non-Taxable. Check also the Distribution Account box then, pick All Income/Expense Accounts and the Product/Service Taxable box then, choose  Non-Taxable.
  6. Select Run report

For more info on customizing your report, please visit this link: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.

Once done, you can memorize the report to save the modification settings on it.

Let me know how this goes and feel free to leave a message in the comment section. I'll be around to help you in running your sales reports in QuickBooks. Take care and have a great day.

Hey Snowman, I figured it out because I've been wondering the same thing lately.

Here's what I found out:

1.  The sales tax liability tool only reports non-taxable sales according to customer.  It does not report non-taxable sales if only a line item is deemed non-taxable.  Even in the suggestions to use the non-taxable detail report filter for product, it still only reports non-taxable according to customer.

2.  I created a customized report to show any items sold during the period that were not taxable.  Basically, I customized a transaction list to show invoice transactions with the A/R paid column and the Taxable amount columns.  This allowed me to see any transaction lines that were not taxed.  It's not super tidy, but it does the job.  If I add the total sales in my sales tax liability report with the total of line items not taxed from this report, I will balance with my P&L report.

3. Now, that being said, the only reason I need this is because my firm's client is not charging correctly for their industry.  In Washington State, services performed where you manipulate a tangible object (construction, repair, or cleaning) are taxable.  In fact, all items and services are taxable.  I assume all sales tax laws must be similar since QB has set up the tax liability tool in this way.  If you are a service company that does not manipulate an object (doctor, lawyer, real-estate, etc.) Then you would not need the tool.  Perhaps, while setting up the company in QBO, if you specified you sell both products and services, it would be different.  Haven't had a chance to find out yet.

My Sales Tax Reports have always showed Taxable and Non-Taxable Sales, but this month it is only showing Taxable.  The State of Florida requires that we include the Non-Taxable when we file.  Can anyone explain how to run the report with both taxes included?
