Placeholder Account in Chart of Accounts

Hello,

I would like to know how to make an account a placeholder in my chart of accounts.

Example: I sell Ford, Chevy, and Toyota vehicles. I'd like to have a placeholder account called Vehicle Sales with Ford, Chevy, and Toyota being accounts underneath that. So how do I make my Vehicle Sales account a placeholder account? I know this is probably not the best example but it helps to illustrate my question.

Thanks,

Bumper2bumper

PS - I think this may be in the wrong category. Sorry!!

@bumper2bumper ,

Vehicle Sales is set up first as an income account

Then setup the income account for Ford using "is a subaccount" checkbox, and use the dropdown to choose Vehicle Sales as the parent account.  Save and New.

Same for Chevy

For Toyota, same except Save and Close.

Thanks, @KimMcCPA . I should have stated I have already set up these Parent /Child or Account/sub-account relationships. The issue I am having is that when I add a new product (Example: F-150) I can accidentally add it to Vehicles Sales rather than Ford. I'd like to have Vehicle Sales locked (placeholder) so I can't accidentally add a product to that account. I should be able to add products to Ford, Chevy, & Toyota but not Vehicle Sales. Thanks in advance.

@bumper2bumper ,

Rats.  Skimmed settings and not seeing a way to force use of a sub account.

This is cheesy, but what if you use all caps just for the parent accounts you don't want to assign to?
