Question

QB 2016 Accountant and Online Version.

I have re-read existing topics on the issue of converting files QBX from different versions of desktop applications. I would like to clarify whether I understand the information provided correctly.

My accountants use QB 2016 Accountant desktop version. They generate files in QBX format and send them to me. They also insist that I should install QB 2016 Accountant desktop version too. However, as I understand it, such a desktop version is no longer supported by the company, and the issue with the license and product keys remains open.

In this regard, I have a question. If I use the online version of the program, will I not be able to use files from my accountants, even if they send me them in formats other than QBX (for example, QBW or QBB) because they will be generated in the 2016 version?

Ask your accountant to send the file in QBB format, not QBX. Then you can use the trial version of QB Desktop 2021 to restore the file and convert it to QBO.

Hi, @Swiet. I'm here to help.

You are correct in stating that Intuit no longer supports QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Accountant 2016. However, your accountant can still use the software without support and services from Intuit.

First, you can consider what your accountant suggested to use the same QBDT version on your computer. However, it's correct that you will have to procure a new license and product key for this.

Next, to answer your question, you can't directly import accountant changes to QBO. As such, you can follow what 4Gal advised to use a trial QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) version to restore the accountant changes, then, migrate the restored file to QBO.

For detailed steps in importing your company data to QBO, let me add this guide: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.
