Unable to Make Asset Account Inactive

I have several fixed asset accounts that are zero now and would like to make inactive.  I continually get a message stating "unable to make account inactive."  Can anyone help me understand why?  thanks.

First off, we need to check in your asset account if you're using the Product and Services. If so, we need to unlink it. 

 

However, the error message "Unable to make the account inactive" you encounter in QuickBooks Online is a possible problem between your computer or device and the QBO servers. QuickBooks may sometimes exhibit strange behavior or experience performance issues caused by browser problems.

 

You can try logging in to your QBO account using a private browser as it ignores websites from using cookies and doesn’t record any history and data. Use these shortcut keys on your keyboard to access incognito mode:

 

  • Safari: Control + Option + P
  • Google Chrome: Press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Firefox or Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + P

 

If this works, it means that you need to clear the browser's cache so the system can start fresh. If you get the same result, I recommend switching to a different supported browser.

Thank for the response.  Still no luck so far. I used Google Chrome in private browsing mode and got the same result.  I even downloaded the desktop app for Quickbooks Online and tried through the app but I get the same message... "unable to make account inactive". 

 

As for the products and services, I checked this out and no, there are no products and services connected to these accounts.  I don't think this will help anyway, because the products and services are linked to income and expense account, correct?  The problem I am having is with other asset accounts and some liability accounts.  

 

What else can I do????

Hello there, @jdcafe. Let me give you further insights regarding inactivating an account in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

 

In QBO, certain asset accounts cannot be inactive. These include the Stock Asset account and the Uncategorized Asset account. If your asset account falls under these categories, please note that deactivating it is not possible. However, other accounts in QBO can be inactivated, such as liability accounts. We appreciate you for following my colleague's suggestion. Since you tried using private mode but didn't achieve your goal, you can contact our support to assist you. They have the necessary expertise and tools that can guide you through making an account inactive. Here's how to contact them:

 

  1. In your QuickBooks, click Help.
  2. Select either tab to get started.

 

Note that if you're using QBO Plus, Essentials, or Simple Start, the support team is only available Monday to Friday from 6 AM to 6 PM Pacific time and Saturday from 6 AM to 3 PM Pacific time. And if you're using QBO Advanced, you can reach the support team any time from any day.
