Hi maymay!

Welcome to QuickBooks Community. Let me assist you with the exported file.

The data you exported data from QuickBooks Online has defaulted in an Excel file format. You'll want to make sure that there's a Microsoft Excel installed on your desktop. If not, you can open it using other spreadsheet applications such as Google Sheets.

Also, if the file won't open after clicking it at the bottom of the browser, you'll want to open File Explorer instead. From there, search and select the downloaded file to open it.

Aside from the Chart of Accounts, you can export other data, too. Please check this article for more details: Export reports, lists, and other data from QuickBooks Online.

I was able to open in file folder but I don't understand why I can't open directly in QB's like I have many times before.  I have excel in Microsoft office.  I appreciate your answer as I'm able to do what I need to.  I tried incognito and no luck.  Thanks

Hello again, maymay. Allow me to join the thread and provide additional information when exporting data in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Exporting data has different processes. If you export a report, it'll download as an excel file in which you can open directly. But if you export data from the Gear icon. It'll export the account list into Excel files contained in a zip format. Thus, you need to go to the zip file and open the excel file from there.

To know more on how you can export your data, see the below articles:

Let me know if you have other questions about exporting data from QBO. I'll be sure to get back to you. Have a great day.
