Hello shore,

Adding subaccounts is a great way to keep your chart of accounts organized and to break down your accounts into greater detail. In QuickBooks Online it's easy to create subaccounts of any main or parent account in your chart of accounts. I'll explain.

To create a subaccount, simply follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to the Gear icon, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Select New from the upper right.
  3. Choose the account type and detail.
  4. Select the checkbox for Is sub-account, and enter the parent account.
  5. Give the subaccount a name and description.
  6. Set the as of date to when you want the account to start, then add the Balance as of the date you chose.
  7. Select a Default Tax Code if necessary.
  8. Hit Save and Close or Save and New if you'd like to make a second subaccount.

To read more on this, check out our article on how to Create subaccounts in your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online. One thing that you'll want to keep in mind is that recording journal entries or transactions against these subaccounts will impact the parent account as well. You'd need to create new separate accounts so that the balance wouldn't impact the Sales of Product Income account.

When it comes to questions like these, it's always a great idea to consult with an accounting professional because it's important that you're creating accounts and journal entries that work best for your business' books.. If you're working with an accountant already, I'm sure they'd be happy to give you some pointers. You can even invite them to work within your QuickBooks account by navigating to the My Accountant tab then entering their email address. If you're not working with an accountant yet, you're in luck! QuickBooks has a database of QuickBooks-certified accountants called Pro Advisors that can give you a hand with things like this. Find one by using the Find a pro to help button from the My Accountant tab.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with. Have a great day!
