A brief history of Labor Day It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when the idea of a “Labor Day” was first introduced. Some credit the idea of honoring the American labor movement to Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and cofounder of the American Federation of Labor. Others believe Matthew Maguire, a machinist, founded the holiday while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.
