I am trying to add contractors to my QBO account. I accidentally added them as Employees. I deleted them as users, then marked them inactive. When I try to add them as Contractors now I get the error that the email is already in use.

Hello there, @BHaynes2. I'm here to make sure you can successfully add your contractor to QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To fix this, I recommend entering a different email address first and then correcting it later. Just make sure to uncheck the box for the option to email contractors on completing their profile before you save it. Let me guide you how:

  1. Go to the Payroll menu and choose Contractors.
  2. Next, select the Add a contractor button.
  3. Enter the Name of the contractor and a different email address.
  4. After that, uncheck the Email this contractor to complete their profile. They'll get their own account to safely share their personal details box. This will allow you to edit the info later.

  5. When ready, click Add contractor.
  6. Then, in that contractor's profile, navigate to the Details tab and select the Add option in the Personal details section.
  7. Select the Contractor type and enter the needed details.
  8. Once done, input the correct email of the contractor and select Save.

When finished, you can now send an invite to your contractor to let them complete their profile by clicking the Send email option.

Once everything is fine, you can also use this resource as a guide in tracking payments for your contractors in QBO: Learn how to add contractors and track payments you make to them.

Keep me posted if you have any other concerns about adding contractors in QBO. I'm just a post away to help. Have a good one and stay safe.
