Question

Authentication error on a rejected 941 tax payment

I have attached the email notice we received from QuickBooks payroll. We have submitted many tax payments through QB for this company file, but this is the first time we have gotten this error. The information works to login on the EFTPS side and make the payment, so the issue has to be on the QB end.

Anyone seen this issue, and found a fix for it?

This isn't the kind of feeling that I'd wish you to have and we know how much time it can take when something isn’t working when using EFTPS, agmhunter.

I've checked here on our end and there's no reported case about this one. Since the EFTPS login works outside QuickBooks Desktop, the EFTPS Internet password may have expired. To resolve this, let's update your EFTPS Internet password in the software. Before doing so, make sure to complete the following:

Once done, proceed to update the EFTPS Internet password. For the steps and details, check out this article: Update your EFTPS Internet passwordOnce everything is verified, you can now try to re-submit the e-payment. You must check the status again after the submission. Here's an article you can refer to for more details about handling payroll e-file and e-pay rejections.

If the same thing happens, I'd suggest contacting our Payroll Support Team. They have the tools to pull up your account in a secure environment and investigate the cause of the EFTPS schedule being rejected. Here's how:

  1. Press F1 to open the Help window.
  2. From the search icon, type Contact Support.
  3. Click Contact us at the bottom part.
  4. Give a brief description of your issue with EFTP and click the Search button.
  5. You'll be routed through How to connect with a QuickBooks expert and you choose which one is best for you.

  • Message an Agent – This allows you to chat directly with a support agent.
  • Talk to a Specialist – Arranges a callback from a support agent.

If you need to review the taxes and contributions, you can run the payroll summary report, check out this article for the steps and details: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop.
