Can't align 1099 to not print in the red areas

There does not seem to be an option to re-align the 1099s like there is the W-2s. Is this an oversight?

Will it be an issue if things are partially printed on the red areas?

Let me assist you in printing 1099, Bratt1.

There's an option in QuickBooks Desktop to align the form 1099. You'll want to follow these steps:

  1. Go to the File menu and select Printer Setup.
  2. From the Form Name drop-down, choose 1099s/1096.
  3. Tap the Align button and make the adjustment. You can also print a sample by clicking Print Sample.
  4. Click OK twice to save the changes.

Before that, make sure that your QuickBooks is up-to-date. Also, you can run the QuickBooks Print & Print Repair Tool to fix issues in printing forms.

Once done, print the 1099 forms again. For the detailed steps, here's how to align forms in QuickBooks Desktop.

I've got your back, @mcshipley.

Let me help you align and print your 1099 form. To start, ensure that your pre-printed forms are ready. Once ready, open the 1099 Wizard and follow the on-screen steps until you see the Choose a filing method window. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Print 1099s button
  2. Choose the range (of date) the 1099s were paid from and tap OK.
  3. Pick the form 1099(s) you want to print and tap the Preview 1099 button.
  4. If the alignment is still incorrect, go to the File menu at the top-left corner and select Printer Setup.
  5. Pick the 1099s/1096 from the list in Form Name.
  6. Choose the Align button and adjust alignment as needed.
  7. Hit OK twice to save the changes.
  8. Once done, click Print 1099.

My problem is the I can get the top 1099 to align, but not the bottom one.  If I align the top to fit in the correct boxes, the bottom one then is totally off.

All of the other boxes in the 1099-misc align perfectly in both the top and bottom forms, however, box 10 prints too low.  Boxes 1 & 3 are fine.  I haven't had to use others.  How do I align on box on form 1099-MISC?

Thanks for posting here, @JulieM2,

We want to make sure there are no delays with your 1099 processing, so we're here to help you out with the alignment.

As discussed by my colleagues in this thread, you can set the alignment within the program. Try these steps first in your QuickBooks account:

  1. From the File menu, choose Printer Setup.
  2. Close the 1099s/1096 from the list in Form Name.
  3. Select the Align button and adjust alignment as needed.
  4. Tap OK twice to save the changes.
  5. Pick the forms to print.

In the meantime, you can use a blank paper for testing and see if it aligns properly to the form. See this article for the steps on how to print 1099s in QuikBooks: How do I print my 1099 forms?

Furthermore, you can use AlexV's recommendation to use Print Repair Tool if in case the first troubleshooting doesn't work.

Kindly update me on how it works so I can provide some more troubleshooting when you need it. I'll be right here anytime.

I keep seeing explanations for QB Desktop, but what about for QB Online? There is now file menu to go to.

Quickbooks is a joke.

There is no possible way to print inside the red portion without the Payers box printing outside the print area. I spent 3 days trying to file electronically on the Tax1099.com site.  Gave up and went to Office Depot and purchased the forms. Gonna print the best I can and file them.

Quickbooks did a terrible job with the 1099-NEC roll out

I can help you resolve the error you're having to print your 1099s, @JM0718.

First, try running the Quick Fix my Program from the QuickBooks Tool. This will help us identify any component issues related to your QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's how:

  1. Close your QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Download or get the latest version of QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe). Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  4. Once done, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.
  5. In the QuickBooks Tool Hub, select Program Problems.
  6. Select Quick Fix my Program.
  7. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

Once done, try printing your 1099s again. If the error persists, run the Verify and rebuild tools. The Verify Data will identify any data issues within your company file. Then, the Rebuild tool will self-resolve it. Check the steps below:

Verify data:

  1. Go to File, then Utilities and choose Verify Data.

If it will detect an error, proceed and Rebuild your data:

  1. Go back to the File menu and then Utilities and select Rebuild Data.
  2. Choose OK if you’ll receive a message to back up your company file.
  3. After creating the backup file, the Rebuild Data utility will run automatically.
  4. Click OK when you get the message Rebuild has completed.

I know how to align the forms to print the 1099's correctly. But every time I try I receive an error and QB shuts down.  This is not acceptable.  And yes I did purchase my forms from QB.

I appreciate you for joining the thread, @oilman01. I want to ensure you'll be able to print your 1099 in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) with no errors.

I can see that you're trying to prepare and align your form and the system shuts down when doing so. QuickBooks usually crashes when it's corrupted or there's damage in the company or installation file.

To isolate the issue, please make sure to update QuickBooks to the latest release as it becomes available to ensure you have all the updated components.

  1. Go to the Help menu, then click on Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Select the Reset Update checkbox to clear all previous update downloads from the Update Now section.
  3. Tap on the Get Updates tab to start the download.
  4. When the download finishes, restart QuickBooks.
  5. When prompted, accept the option to install the new release.

After that, reopen your QBDT file and print your 1099 again. If the error continues, you can check out this link for more troubleshooting steps: Solutions for when QuickBooks has stopped working.
