when trying to enter my pay history with another provider, I am unable to enter deductions for 401K as well 401K catchup contributions. I am getting this message "cannot select regular & catchup deductions of the same type".   401K and 401K cath are different deductions on the pay stub, so not clear why I can't enter both entries

Thanks for posting in the Community! Let's resolve this error message together so you can add your pay history to QuickBooks Online Payroll.

In QuickBooks Payroll, you can set up a 401(k) contribution for your employees, but you can only have one 401(k) configuration at a time. The error message you encountered resulted from adding the catch-up contribution on top of an existing setup.

That said, you can begin by setting up a regular 401(k) retirement plan. Once it reaches the annual maximum of $23,000, you can delete the regular 401(k) plan and proceed to create the 401(k) Catch-up.

Here's how:

  1. On the left navigation panel, go to Payroll.
  2. Proceed to the Employees tab.
  3. Choose an employee and click Edit in the Deductions & Contributions section.
  4. Click + Add deduction/contribution.
  5. In the Deduction/contribution dropdown menu, pick the + Add deduction/contribution.
  6. Select Retirement plans in the Deduction/contribution type.
  7. On the Type dropdown, choose 401 (k) Catch-up.
  8. Fill in other necessary fields, then Save.

To delete the regular 401(k) plan, press the trash bin icon and click Delete to confirm. Afterward, you can follow the steps above to set up the catch-up plan.
