Question

Charged penalty and interest on state withholding because it was filed late by quickbooks, do they owe us a refund since it was their fault?

Came back to Quickbooks Payroll after being with another company for 2 weeks. Was "onboarded" and we have it set up for our taxes to be filed by QB's. The monthly filing for state taxes was done but did not include these 2 weeks, contacted them in August about it as that is when it was due and they were still working on it. Nothing happened, contacted them in December and had to open a new case to get it taken care of. The July 2023 taxes for those 2 weeks were not filed until January of the current year.

I understand you need to clarify things about the state withholding that was filed late, servpro9106. Let me explain things further to you.

Some penalties aren't covered by QuickBooks. One of these is the fines or interest incurred outside of QuickBooks Online Payroll Elite, from errors made during periods before your first payroll date with Elite. This may incorporate mistakes from paychecks or tax payments/tax form filings created outside of Elite (including tax payments or tax form fillings made in other QuickBooks Online Payroll offerings).

Since you mentioned that you are with another company for 2 weeks, this could be the reason why QuickBooks didn't include the 2 weeks' state taxes.

However, we advise you to contact the QuickBooks Online Payroll support team regarding this issue to seek clarification and confirm if you are eligible for a refund. Furthermore, QuickBooks offers assistance and guidance on handling penalties and interest related to late tax payments.

Here how:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Go to Help (?).
  3. Select Contact Us.
  4. Enter your concern, then select Let's Talk.
  5. Choose a way to connect with us:
    • Get a callback from the next available expert.

Additionally, QuickBooks covers the penalties and interest incurred for any payroll tax mistakes. You can review this page: Trusted experts. Guaranteed coverage at tax time. Scroll down to the Penalties that aren’t Covered section to see the full information.

We are still here to assist you further with your payroll tax concerns. Let me know by adding a comment below. Have a fantastic day ahead.

@servpro9106  Theoretically, yes.

Ethically, absolutely.

Likely to happen? Not at all.
