Contractor and Employee

I have someone who has been an independent contractor for me during 2024. She is now becoming an employee for one service but still remaining a contractor for another specific service she offers me that I don't provide. I just marked her "inactive" as a contractor to set her up as an employee... but technically, she is both. Also, since she's now marked "inactive" as a contractor, she is not listed for me to set up 1099 filings for last year.

How can she be marked as both?

Hello there, 3dogtrainingllc. I'm here to help you successfully record the individual as both an employee and a contractor.

Before we begin, do you need to prepare a 1099 and W2 for them? If so, you'll need to reactivate the contractor and also add them as an employee. Please remember that their full names must be unique, as QuickBooks does not permit duplicate names. You can add a middle initial for the employee to distinguish them from the contractor.

Here's how to reactivate the contractor:

  1. Go to Payroll and select Contractors.
  2. Toggle the status dropdown and click Inactive.
  3. Open the profile of the inactive contractor.
  4. Change the status by choosing the Mark as active.

Then, refer to this article about setting up your employee: Add your new employee to QuickBooks Payroll.
