Out pastor got a retroactive raise and I paid the retroactive amount in the "Other Earnings Type" box. Unfortunately I forgot to zero out that box is the next two paychecks and he was overpaid. In correcting that overpayment will the Quickbooks Payroll system recognize a negative number in the Other Earnings Type box and withhold from the paycheck and correct the year to date field total?

QuickBooks doesn't recognize negative numbers on pay types when running payroll, Dougherbst. Let's work together to handle the overpayment.

To get started, we can create a special deduction item to recoup the overpayment. I'll show you how:

  1. Go to Payroll and click Employees.
  2. Double-click on the employee’s name.
  3. Scroll down to the Deductions and contributions section, then click Edit.
  4. Hit the Add deduction/contribution.
  5. From the Deduction/contribution drop-down, select  Add deduction/contribution.
  6. Enter the deduction details then Save.

If you're uncertain about which deduction types to select, it's advisable to consult with your accountant or consider utilizing QuickBooks Live Expert Assisted services. Our knowledgeable professionals simplify financial management and offer personalized advice to keep your records accurate.
