Question

Do I need to have Quickbooks Payroll in order to do direct deposit for an employee or does the standard quickbooks version work?

Nice to have you in the Community space, Joby.

Yes, you got it correct. You'll need to have a payroll subscription to pay your employees via a direct deposit (DD). You can visit our Payroll pricing page to have an overview of our Payroll plans and to know which one matches your business needs.

Once you've subscribed to our payroll, you'll need to set up your bank for DD and fill out the authorization form. When everything is all set, you can now set your employees for DD. I'll guide you how.

  1. Go to the Payroll menu in your QuickBooks Online (QBO).
  2. Then select the Employees tab.
  3. Click the employee's name.
  4. Select the Edit pencil icon next to Pay.
  5. Under How do you want to pay this employee? section, select how the employee wants to receive their pay. Then select Direct deposit.
  6. Enter the needed details and select Done.

You can also read through this article for the complete process: Set up direct deposit for employees.

I'm also adding these links that can guide you on when to submit your employees DD and how to check the status of it:
