Question

e-filing state of NJ W3, W2`s

In each of the last 3 years, I e-filed these reports directly from Quickbooks. (e-filing of these reports is required)

I tried to do the same for 2023, and Quickbooks will not allow me to do it, saying I now have to upgrade

to Enhanced Payroll. I am a small business with 3 employees and simply want to file these 3 or so pages

once a year as I have been doing without paying any more. What gives? Could I be doing something wrong?

Thank you for using QuickBooks Desktop to handle payroll, @Marathon MD. I'll share some information regarding the upgrade prompt you received and the charges.

Intuit is streamlining the QuickBooks Desktop Payroll pricing and updating old billing structures to match current plans. It means we're no longer offering the Payroll Basic and Standard. If you're currently on one of these products, you'll be moved to the Enhanced.

Since April 2023, QuickBooks migrated existing customers on the old legacy payroll plans to the current ones before the annual renewal date. This includes subscribers who are on pricing plans with direct deposit fees. For instance, you will receive an email with the subject line Action required to continue using QuickBooks Payroll thirty (30) days before the date. It will ask for consent to resettle to the new plans along with in-product messaging.

To accept the changes, follow the instructions below:

  1. Sign in to the Customer Account Management Portal.
  2. In a window that asks for your consent, click Yes.
  3. Once you see the order confirmation, you are all set.

However, if you do not wish to migrate, the plan will be terminated. As a result, you can only view your payroll history, but you will no longer be able to run payroll.

Here's an article about product and price transformations: Understand changes to QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Basic and Standard.

Once settled, you can start filing your state payroll tax forms and paying your state taxes electronically

It's my priority that you get the answers you need. Wishing you and your business continued success! Merry Christmas!
