I have changed plans from a dental only plan to one that incudes both dental and vision. I want to adjusts payroll for the employee's 25% contribution. The system has dental but not vision. Should I just combine the two expenses for the payroll deduction?

Hi there, @Sjs4. I'll share some information on how you can set up the employee deduction for your new plan.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), there are several item types for Health insurance that you can use. Such as Medical insurance, Dental insurance, and Vision insurance. That said, you can set up a separate payroll item for dental and vision. To do so, refer to these steps:

  1. Open your QBO account and select the Payroll menu.
  2. From there, locate the employee you need to adjust the payroll deductions.
  3. Select the name of the employee and select the Profile tab.
  4. Next, scroll down to the Deductions & Contributions section and click Edit.
  5. Go to the Deductions and Contributions section and click the +Add deduction/contribution option.
  6. In the Deduction/contribution field, choose +Add deduction/contribution and select Health insurance in the Deduction/contribution type.
  7. Next, select Vision Insurance or Dental Insurance in the Type box.
  8. Then, fill in the needed details and select Save.

For reference, check out this article: Set up and manage payroll items for your insurance benefit plan.

However, if you're unable to see the Vision insurance type, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to determine if this is a browser-related issue. Let's start by accessing your QBO account through an incognito mode. This does not store cache which has the potential to become corrupted and cause unexpected behavior.

Below are the shortcut keys you can use:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari: press Command + Shift +N

Once signed in, check if you can now see the Vision insurance option. If this works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache. If not, I recommend using another supported browser or device. Might be that the current one you're using has a temporary issue with the program.

Then, you can run a payroll report to track your insurance benefit plan contribution.

I'm always here ready to lend a hand if you have other concerns managing your employee's deduction. Have a good one and stay safe.
