employee profiles need your attention before you can pay them

I went to run payroll today, as I do every Tuesday, and I came across this notification "employee profiles need your attention before you can pay them:" And it lists both of my employees. When I click on an employee to investigate, I see that the "Tax Withholding" section needs attention via the orange exclamation point. They have already set themselves up when I hired them months ago and I was able to pay them without issue until this week.

Why is it suddenly asking me to enter tax withholding? Also, suddenly the "employee self-set up" tick box is greyed out for one employee, and doesn't appear for another employee. Is the system down or experiencing issues right now?

I understand how important it is to have a smooth and seamless payroll process, Forte. Allow me to share insights about this matter.

I've looked into our system and confirmed that there's an ongoing issue with payroll triggering an error message: "Employee profiles need your attention before you can pay them." Our dedicated product engineers are diligently working to address these concerns at the earliest opportunity.

With that in mind, I recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks Online support team so that you can be included in the list of affected users. This will help our engineers assess the scope of the issue and keep you informed via email updates once it's resolved. Furthermore, please keep in mind that they only operate during specific hours, which are from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday, and 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM PT on Saturdays.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Choose Help (?).
  3. Select either tab to get started:
  • Assistant: Get quick, personalized answers. Select a suggested option, or type a question or topic you need help with. If you decide you need further help, you can still Talk to a human.
  • Search: Search the QuickBooks Online knowledge base directly, or select Contact Us and choose a way to connect with us:

Having a similar issue.  Regular payroll works fine, but when trying to pay bonus, 1 employee shows this message and there seems to be no issue with the employee.

I need to get the bonus checks out today.  Is there any update on this condition, or a work-around so that I can get it done??

I understand that it's urgent for you to complete this task so that you can pay bonuses to your employees, @MJ5180

Firstly, I want to let you know that the investigation that my colleague mentioned is already resolved and closed. On the other hand, once you receive a prompt message that says, "employee profiles need your attention before you can pay them", it usually means that some information is missing from your employees' profiles.

To resolve this, we need to check your employees' profiles and ensure that all the information is complete. Here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Hover to Payroll and select Employees
  2. Click the employee's name, then check all the information. This includes the Tax WithholdingPay typesPayment MethodDeduction, and Contribution section.

If the information is already completed and the issue persists., let's open your account using a private window. Sometimes, QuickBooks may be poorly configured due to locally stored internet cache files, which can contribute to the software's unusual behavior.

Here are the keyboard shortcuts:

  • Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge: Ctrl+ Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Option + P

If it's a success, return to your regular browser. Then, clear your cache to refresh website preferences and remove temporary files that may interfere with QuickBooks. On the other hand, you may also use other supported web browsers
