I just finished running my payroll and the program stopped responding while it was updating in the background.  Is it safe to close the program?

To ensure it's safe, allow the program a few more minutes, as heavy tasks can temporarily make it unresponsive, SEMCO.

Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Ensure that your payroll software and operating system are up to date. Updates often include bug fixes that enhance stability.
  2. Use your computer's Task Manager (press Ctrl+Alt+Delete on Windows) to check if the payroll program is still actively using system resources. This may indicate that the program is still processing data.
  3. To minimize potential data loss, consider restarting the program if it remains unresponsive. After restarting, check for any data inconsistencies or missing information. Be sure to back up your data regularly to prevent loss.
