Question

Health Insurance Premium

I just started working for a new employer and my check stub says “adjustments to net pay” and that’s where my health insurance premium is deducted. The owner says that it shows it is pre tax online when he enters the information. Health insurance should be a Pre-taxed deduction, so I’m wondering why it’s showing at a net pay adjustment. Is this correct??

I'm here to share some information about benefit premiums, Brookieb1981.

Health insurance premiums are generally deducted from your pre-tax pay. This means that you are paying for your insurance before any of the federal, state, and other taxes are deducted. It should show as deductions from your gross in the employee pay stub.

Your insurance might have been added as an after-tax since it's reflected as an adjustment to your net pay. In this case, you'll have to coordinate when your employer to ensure that the payroll items are set up accurately. I'd recommend sharing this link with them to be guided in tracking your insurance plan in QuickBooks Desktop: Set up and manage payroll items for your insurance benefit plan.

In addition, here's an article that will help you manage your payroll information and print your own pay stubs/W-2s online: View your pay stubs, time off, and year-to-date pay in QuickBooks Workforce.
