Question

Historical 941forms

I run Quickbooks desktop and ran my own payroll prior to switching to a service in 4th Qtr 2021.  I now need to access my 3rd Qtr 941 which was filed electronically filed via Quickbooks.  When I attempt to retrieve it I from the forms tab, I get a warning that says "you must download and install latest payroll update before you can process payroll forms".  When I click OK, the system crashes with an Unrecoverable Error.

I'm NOT trying to process new payroll or forms, I just need to pull an old already processed form.

Thanks for letting us know about your issue, @CS1111. I'm pleased to assist you in resolving unrecoverable errors in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) so you can access historical payroll forms.

If you encountered an Unrecoverable Error XXXXX XXXXX, it means QuickBooks has closed abruptly. Before we troubleshoot, ensure to update the program to the latest release and create a backup copy of your company file.

First, the unrecoverable error happens when you have a large report or multiple windows configured to open automatically. That said, let's open the program with all of them closed. Here's how:

  1. Open QBDT.
  2. Select your company file in No Company Open.
  3. Press and hold ALT on your keyboard and click Open. Don't let go of it until the file opens.
  4. If QBDT asks you to log in, release ALT and enter your password. Press and hold ALT again, then select OK.

If the issue persists, continue to the solutions outlined in this article: Troubleshoot Unrecoverable Error XXXXX XXXXX.

Once resolved, you can now update your payroll tax table and access your previously filed 941 forms in QBDT.

Additionally, here's a list of payroll reports to generate whenever you need a closer look at what you've paid, including employee taxes: Run payroll reports.

Stay in touch if you have more questions about accessing historical payroll forms in QBDT. I'll ensure to answer them at the earliest time possible. Keep safe.
