Hello, FACI13164. It’s great to see you actively managing your payroll items in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). This demonstrates your commitment to accuracy and efficiency.

While there isn’t a direct option to modify existing payroll items, I can guide you through deleting your current custom payroll item and creating a new one. Take note that we can only delete the item if you haven't use it in your employee records. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Navigate to the Lists menu and choose Payroll Item List.
  2. Find the custom payroll item and right-click on it.
  3. Select Delete Payroll Item, then OK.

  4. Click the Payroll Item dropdown and select New.
  5. Pick a setup method that works for you, then click Next.
  6. Choose a payroll item type, then Next.
  7. Check the boxes that apply to how you compensate your employees, then select Next.
  8. Set the hourly compensation details, then click Next.
  9. Hit Finish to save your new payroll item.

If you have already use the item, consider renaming it. You can add a unique identifier to indicate that it is no longer being used, then create a new one.

After making these adjustments and verifying everything, you can confidently run your payroll. For more guidance, check out this article: Create and run your payroll.

If you have any additional questions about the process, you're free to connect with me anytime. I'm here to support you every step of the way. Wishing you a smooth and successful payroll update!

Unfortunately there are several payroll items I need to change and did not want to delete and start over.  Our system has been in place for over 20 years.  I don't think it would be a good idea to delete those payroll items entirely as then they would not show up on previous years reports.  I guess at this point I will have to rename the items I need to change and create new accurate items to use going forward.  QB should do an update allowing you to make changes to existing items.
