Question

How do I create a journal entry to correct the account my payroll is recorded in? The money was being debited from the correct account but recording in the old account.

We connected our new bank account to actually pull the money out of but did not set the chart of accounts to record it in the new account.

Hi tasha-duttonbrot,

You wouldn't want to make a journal entry because it will post to your register and can cause unwanted entries when you reconcile.

If you processed payroll through checks, you can delete them, update the bank details in your payroll settings, and recreate the paychecks. However, if it was processed by direct deposit, you will want to contact our QBO Payroll support for assistance.

Delete a paycheck:

  1. Go to Payroll, then Employees.
  2. Select Paycheck list. Download or copy the paycheck details of each employee for your reference.
  3. Select the paycheck(s) you'd like to delete, then select Delete.
  4. Select Yes.

Update the bank account in the payroll settings:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙, then Payroll settings.
  2. Select Edit ✎ next to Accounting.
  3. Select Edit ✎ to update the bank account.
  4. Choose which account the transaction of the specific payroll item should go.
  5. Then select Continue until you're done.
