Question

How do I fix an employee paycheck after it has already been direct deposited? I overpaid by 30 hours and I need the money returned.

I already Voided the check. 
Does that refund my account? 
Do I create another check to send with the correct amount?

First off, allow me to express my appreciation for your effort in performing some steps to aid this overpayment. Truly, we appreciate customers like you. Let me assist you further and fully resolve this.

 

Since you've already voided the paycheck, we no longer have to wait for a refund since once the paycheck is voided, it won't reach the employee's bank account. With that being said, yes, we can create a brand new paycheck with the correct amount.

 

I'd still love to include the steps in case you need one:

 

  1. Go to Payroll and select Employees.
  2. Click on the Run Payroll option. If it's relevant, choose the payroll schedule you prefer, and then click on Continue.
  3. Select or review the Pay period and Pay date. Locate and choose the employees you'd like to pay.
  4. To enter your pay details, choose the column or click on the Actions ⋮ icon. Enter other necessary info.
  5. Select Preview payroll.
  6. Select or review the QuickBooks Bank account to track your payroll.
  7. Select Preview payroll details or Submit payroll.
  8. Select Close.

Thank you for the reply.

 

The employee notified me this morning that his paycheck was overpaid into his bank account. The funds have already been issued.

 

I think I need to make a "repeal" request?

Hello there, @hershbergerpaint. I'm here to help you get this fixed.

 

When correcting a direct deposit paycheck, you’ll have to delete the check before 5 PM, two banking days before the check date. Otherwise, you can have an arrangement with your employee to include any overpayment or underpayment in their next paycheck. 

 

You can create a deduction payroll item to denote the overpaid amount. I can guide you on how to do it.
 

  1. Go to the Workers menu.
  2. Choose the Employees tab.
  3. Double-click on the employee’s name.
  4. Select the Pencil Icon beside Pay.
  5. Scroll down to the Does [employee’s name] have any deductions? Section.
  6. Click the Add deductions link.
  7. Pick Deduction from the drop-down menu.
  8. From the Deduction/contribution drop-down, select New deduction/contribution.
  9. Enter the deduction details.
  10. Click Ok.
