I have recently moved to NY where I have to pay SDI and PFL.
Not sure how to set up this liability since our payroll company will not debit these amounts - they are client responsibility.

Hello, @Finrick999.

I'm here to share details about recording payroll taxes in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

You can enter your SDI and PFl directly into your employee's information. The steps to do this are pretty quick and easy.

To record SDI or your local tax, here's how:

  1. In QBO, go to the Payroll menu on the left pane.
  2. Proceed to the Employees page.
  3. Select your employee.
  4. From Tax withholding, click Edit.
  5. In the Local taxes section, select the applicable local taxes.
  6. When finished, hit Save.

To add your Paid Family Leave (PFI), here's how:

  1. Go back to the Payroll menu, then Employees.
  2. Select your employee.
  3. From Deductions & contributions, tick Start or Edit.
  4. Click +Add deduction/contribution
  5. For Deduction/contribution type, select Other taxable deductions.
  6. For Type, select NY PFL.
  7. Enter NY Paid Family Leave in the Description field.
  8. Hit Save, then Done.
